Bryce Harper Sends Important Message to Phillies Clubhouse After Concerning Sweep
The Philadelphia Phillies were swept by the New York Mets at Citi Field in a series that put the Mets right back in the National League East race.
Many of the Phillies’ stars struggled in the three-game series. Trea Turner went 1-for-14, Kyle Schwarber went 0-for-11 and J.T. Realmuto went 0-for-12. The team was 3-for-22 with runners in scoring position.
Bryce Harper was one of the Phillies’ stars who put together a strong series. He went 5-for-13 with two RBI. However, just his efforts will not be enough down the stretch. The Phillies have had a comfortable lead in the division for a couple of weeks, and Harper called out the team’s sense of urgency.

“It’s a good team over there, obviously,” Harper said, per The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber. “Teams can get hot and get hot at the right time and get rolling. But I trust everyone in here. We’ve got to have a sense of urgency to win games. We’ve got to show up and play our best baseball, especially right now and down the stretch.”
The Phillies are still leading the division and are realistic contenders for the top seed in the National League. However, Harper continued to emphasize not getting comfortable and responding after being swept.
“It’s (about) understanding that we have to have a sense of urgency as well, you know?” Harper said on how the Phillies need to respond, per Lauber. “We can’t just say, ‘Hey, we’re four games up, and we’ve got a lead on them.'”
Harper is one of the best players of this generation. He has two MVP Awards, four Silver Sluggers and eight All-Star selections. However, he is still chasing a World Series. The Phillies lost the Fall Classic a few years ago and have been contenders year in and year out.
Harper understands that the team playing its best baseball late in the year usually has the makings to go deep into October. Last year, the Mets got hot late and rode it all the way to the National League Championship Series. The Phillies cannot get comfortable, or the red-hot Mets could force them into a wild card spot.
