Cake Recall Sparks Warning to Publix Customers in 8 States
The James Skinner LLC is recalling Publix brand Maple Walnut Coffee Cake due to wrong ingredient labels on the product.
Newsweek reached out to the company and Publix on Wednesday for comment.
Numerous public health alerts and recalls have been issued this year due to potential damage, foodborne illness, contamination, undeclared food allergens or inspection issues.
Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or allergies every year. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the nine “major” food allergens in the United States are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts and peanuts.
“The product may represent a serious or life-threatening health risk to people with a walnut allergy if they consume the impacted product,” the alert warns.
According to the alert, the recalled cake was packaged in a clear plastic container, “then inadvertently individually labeled as Publix Raspberry Coffee Cake.” The raspberry cake label says “PROCESSED ON EQUIPMENT THAT ALSO PROCESSES ALMONDS, PECANS AND WALNUTS” but walnuts are not listed on the ingredients list.

The recalled cake was sent to Sourcing & Distribution Specialists in central Florida, then distributed to Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, the alert says.
The recalled product is 14 ounces, has a lot code number of 5309, SKU number 54591 and was manufactured on November 5, 2025.
There have been no reports of injuries or illnesses related to the recall, the alert says.
“The issue was discovered by a retail store employee who observed the visible walnuts on top of the product and noticed that the product had a Raspberry Coffee Cake label instead of a Maple Walnut Coffee Cake label,” the alert adds.
People who have purchased the recalled cake are urged to return it to a Publix store and those with a walnut allergy should not consume the product, according to the alert.
Customers with additional questions can contact The James Skinner LLC via phone at 1-800-358-7428 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET weekdays.
In an email to Newsweek in January, the FDA said, “Most recalls in the U.S. are carried out voluntarily by the product manufacturer and when a company issues a public warning, typically via news release, to inform the public of a voluntary product recall, the FDA shares that release on our website as a public service.
“The FDA’s role during a voluntary, firm-initiated, recall is to review the recall strategy, evaluate the health hazard presented by the product, monitor the recall, and as appropriate alert the public and other companies in the supply chain about the recall.
“The FDA provides public access to information on recalls by posting a listing of recalls according to their classification in the FDA Enforcement Report, including the specific action taken by the recalling company. The FDA Enforcement Report is designed to provide a public listing of products in the marketplace that are being recalled.”
Additional information on recalls can be found via the FDA’s Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts.
