Calvin Booth Breaks Silence on Being Fired by Nuggets

On Tuesday, the Denver Nuggets made headlines across the NBA by parting ways with both their championship-winning head coach, Michael Malone, and general manager, Calvin Booth—a move that surprised many and sent tremors through the league.

It’s a move that was quite the head-scratcher, especially as the playoffs are quickly approaching. Nonetheless, the Nuggets’ front office felt like it was the right decision, and they will now enter the playoffs with an interim head coach and no general manager.
Although the dust is nowhere near settling, Booth spoke to Tony Jones of The Athletic about his firing.

“I am greatly appreciative of the opportunity,” Booth said. “I don’t have any regrets. I did my job to the best of my ability.”

Booth, 48, had been part of the Nuggets’ front office since 2017. He was elevated from assistant general manager to general manager in July 2020 and was entering the final year of his contract.
At one point earlier this season, Booth was reportedly nearing a contract extension, but the organization eventually withdrew that offer.
Josh Kroenke, vice chairman of Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and owner of the Nuggets, later released a statement addressing the decision to move on from Booth.

“I want to thank Calvin Booth for leading our front office for the past three years and most importantly for helping put the final pieces in place for the roster that delivered Denver and our fans their first NBA Championship,” Kroenke said. “Calvin’s knowledge of the game, his passion for scouting, and his long history as a player and executive in the NBA helped lift our organization to new heights which we will continue moving forward. We are grateful to Calvin for his eight years with the Nuggets and know his place in Nuggets history as our first championship winning GM will be honored for years to come.”
With the playoffs on the horizon and a pivotal offseason approaching, the decisions the Nuggets make—or choose not to make—could have ripple effects throughout the league and potentially reshape the competitive landscape.
