Cardinals $15 Million Pitcher Remains St. Louis’ Top Trade Candidate

The St. Louis Cardinals have a tough decision to make with veteran pitcher Erick Fedde this season.

Fedde is on an expiring contract, so it would make sense to trade him away. But he’s also helping the team win games and stay in the postseason hunt.

Will the Cardinals hold onto the veteran righty, or will they look to trade him this season?

FanSided’s Josh Jacobs recently suggested Fedde was the team’s most likely player to be traded this season despite his recent struggles.

“One name that feels likely to be on the move is starting pitcher Erick Fedde,” Jacobs wrote. “Fedde, whom the Cardinals acquired in the Tommy Edman trade last deadline, is in the final year of his contract and was making just $7.5 million this year, so he is making relatively little money for someone who profiles as a middle or back-end of the rotation veteran starter.

“With Michael McGreevy ready for a rotation spot, Steven Matz as veteran depth hybrid reliever/spot starter role, and both top pitching prospects Quinn Mathews and Tekoah Roby finding success in Triple-A, the Cardinals could move Fedde while having the necessary pitching depth to continue their improbable run in 2025.”

It makes sense to trade Fedde, but the Cardinals might not net much of a return for him at this point. The righty hasn’t been great this season, so it’s unlikely the Cardinals can land any sort of significant prospect return.

However, trading the righty would open up a spot on the big league roster for some prospect talent that deserves to be in St. Louis. It would also net some mid-tier prospects in return.
