For the better part of the last few years, the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense has leaned heavily on All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie.
But after McDuffie was traded to the Los Angeles Rams this offseason, the Chiefs suddenly found themselves thin at one of the most important positions on the field.
Add in other departures from the defensive backfield, notably Jaylen Watson and Bryan Cook, and the team’s cornerback room quickly became one of the biggest question marks on the roster.
That uncertainty set the stage for a move that instantly caught the NFL’s attention.
On Thursday, the Chiefs signed former Buffalo Bills first-round pick Kaiir Elam in a move that has already sparked plenty of conversation across the league.
At first glance, it’s a logical depth signing for a defense in transition. But once you look closer at the history behind it, the move becomes much more intriguing.

The irony of the situation traces back to the 2022 NFL Draft.
That night, both the Bills and Chiefs aggressively moved up the board to secure cornerbacks they believed would anchor their secondaries for years.
Buffalo traded up to select Elam with the 23rd overall pick, while Kansas City jumped up two spots earlier to grab McDuffie at No. 21.
Four years later, neither player remains with the team that drafted him.
McDuffie is now in Los Angeles after landing a massive four-year, $124 million deal following his trade to the Rams, while Elam has taken a winding path through the league that included stops with the Bills, Dallas Cowboys, and Tennessee Titans before landing in Kansas City.
In many ways, the Chiefs have essentially replaced their former first-round cornerback with Buffalo’s, and fans online were quick to take notice.
“HA that’s funny, Bills traded up so we couldn’t get him, and we drafted Trent. Now Trent isn’t here, and we have the guy who the Bills thought was better than Trent,” one user wrote.
“Honestly, watching Bills fans crash out when he becomes awesome is going to be more exciting than KC filling their DB hole with a cast off 🤣,” another commented.
“He’s already helped the Chiefs win AFC Championships, makes sense to pay him now,” one other fan joked.
“Poetic justice if he terrorizes the chiefs in the AFC championship and let’s the Bills go to the Super Bowl,” another added.

“Bills legend, Chiefs should’ve drafted him before Trent,” one other posted.

Elam entered the league with significant expectations after starring at Florida and showcasing elite athletic traits, including a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and prototypical size for an outside corner.
However, his early NFL career hasn’t followed the trajectory many anticipated.
Across 43 career games, including 19 starts, Elam has recorded 114 total tackles, two interceptions, and three fumble recoveries.
He flashed promise as a rookie in Buffalo, posting two interceptions and 41 tackles in 13 games during the 2022 season.
But injuries, inconsistent playing time, and depth chart competition limited his impact over the next two seasons.
By 2025, Elam was bouncing between teams, appearing in 10 games for Dallas before finishing the season with Tennessee in a reserve role.
Now, at just 24 years old, he gets another opportunity, and perhaps his most intriguing one yet.
A draft-night storyline from 2022 has unexpectedly resurfaced in 2026, and it just added another fascinating wrinkle to one of the NFL’s most intense rivalries.
