Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

One of the most eye-catching game reveals of recent years has been Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, an upcoming turn-based RPG from French developer Sandfall Interactive. After an impressive gameplay demonstration during Xbox’s January Developer Direct, the developer has announced that it is working on a live-action film adaptation of the title.

Sandfall Interactive is working with Story Kitchen to develop the film adaptation. A report from Variety reveals that Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson & Mike Goldberg will produce the film, while the team is on the hunt for a director and cast.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of ‘Expedition 33’ to the big screen,” said Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson & Mike Goldberg. “The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”

“Partnering with Story Kitchen allows us to expand the universe of ‘Clair Obscur’ beyond the gaming realm,” said Sandfall Interactive’s CEO/Creative Director, Guillaume Broche. “Their expertise in storytelling and passion for our vision make them the perfect team to translate our game into a captivating film.”

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set in a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France. The game follows a new expedition of heroes on a quest to destroy “The Paintress”, a supernatural entity that paints a number each year that kills every one of that age.

Expedition 33 is just one of the many highly-anticipated games releasing in 2025. The game combines turn-based combat with real-time mechanics and a fully 3D overworld map for a fresh perspective on the genre.

Story Kitchen is also developing adaptations of other popular video games, including Tomb Raider, Dredge, Just Cause, and more. In other video game movie news, Pacific Drive is being adapted into TV from Aquaman’s director, while Barbarian director Zach Cregger is directing a Resident Evil film.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is releasing on April 24, 2025, on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be released on day one on PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate.
