Per Brett McMurphy of On3, Colorado State fired Jay Norvell. The decision came after CSU was defeated at home by Hawaii 31-19.
Via ON3:
“Colorado State fired head coach Jay Norvell after Saturday’s loss against Hawaii, according to On3’s Brett McMurphy. The 62-year-old Norvell has been the Rams’ head coach since 2022, but the program is moving on without him after Colorado State fell to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West this season.”
Norvell, 62, went 18-26 and 13-13 in Mountain West play during his four seasons with the Rams. Norvell’s best season in Fort Collins, Colorado, came in 2024 when CSU went 8-5 but lost 43-17 to the Miami Redhawks in the Arizona Bowl.
Colorado State went 3-9 during Norvell’s first season with the program and 5-7 in 2023. The Rams appeared to be making an upward trajectory at the end of last season, but CSU started this campaign 2-5.
Norvell coached at Nevada before taking over the Rams coaching job. He went 33-26 during his time with the Wolf Pack.
Norvell played college football for Iowa before playing as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears in 1987 on the practice squad.
Colorado State has five games remaining in the regular season. They will travel to play Wyoming in Week 9 before taking on UNLV, New Mexico, Boise State and Air Force in November.
