Commanders Have New-Look Offense Following Blockbuster Deebo Samuel Trade

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is the Washington Commanders’ newest offensive weapon. The San Francisco 49ers traded Samuel, who was once their most productive offensive player, to the Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

Now, quarterback Jayden Daniels has another weapon in his arsenal for the 2025 season. Washington had a remarkable 2024 season, but lost in the NFC Championship to the eventual Super Bowl champion, the Philadelphia Eagles.
One could argue the Super Bowl window is just opening for Washington, and adding Samuel only makes the Commanders offense more of a threat.
The Commanders shocked the football world when they eliminated the Detroit Lions in the first round of the playoffs, but the team still had holes to address. A few voids on the roster include the defensive line, cornerback, and wide receiver.

“We’ve got a lot of holes again on our roster in terms of players who played really well for us,” general manager Adam Peters said via the team transcript. “So, we’ll be active in free agency, because we have to be.”
With the arrival of Samuel, the Commanderw can get creative with their scheme especially since the 49ers utilized the 29-year-old as both a wideout and running back.
During Daniels’ rookie year, tight end Zach Ertz and wide receiver Terry McLaurin played a key role in his success. Ertz was one of his favorite targets last season, as the tight end recorded 654 yards and seven touchdowns on 66 receptions. One score included the game-winner against the Atlanta Falcons, which handed the Commanders a playoff berth.
Before the trade for Samuel, the Commanders had four receivers on the roster: McLaurin, Luke McCaffrey, Dyami Brown, Olamide Zaccheaus. However, Washington will have to decide whether to bring back Brown and Zaccheaus.
The Commanders have already improved at the wide receiver position with the blockbuster deal so early in the offseason.
Early in February, Samuel announced he was ready for a fresh start.
“It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel said. “But I have to do what’s best. I’m more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime but now I think it’s best that we find another team.”
By March 1st, Samuel has found a new home in the NFC East.
