Controversial President Trump Golf Course to Host Marquis Event
The long-rumored return of a major tour to the network of golf courses owned by U.S. President Donald Trump has finally become a reality. The DP World Tour has decided to award an event to one of his properties in Scotland.
It is the Scottish Championship, which returns to the schedule and will be played at Trump International Golf Links Scotland in Aberdeenshire from August 7-10. The event is the penultimate of the so-called “Closing Swing” of the circuit and will have a stunning purse of $ 2.75 million.
The information was released on the official DP World Tour website. In making the announcement, the circuit’s CEO, Guy Kinnings, highlighted the venue’s reputation:
“Trump International Golf Links Scotland has already earned a reputation as one of the best modern links courses in the UK and it promises to be an excellent venue for the return of the Scottish Championship to our schedule.”

President Trump’s son and vice chairman of the organization that bears his name, Eric Trump, emphasized the importance of the moment:
“We are honored to host the Scottish Championship on the DP World Tour at our iconic property. 2025 is an incredible year for Trump International, Scotland, as we proudly welcome two world-class tournaments and celebrate the highly anticipated grand opening of our new championship links course.”
“This significant milestone reflects the hard work of our team and is a true testament to the exceptional golf and hospitality we deliver in Scotland.”
Trump International Golf Links Scotland features a championship course designed by Dr. Martin Hawtree. It is a par-71 that stretches 7,300 yards long. Its construction, which began in 2008, sparked numerous protests and backlash from local residents more than a decade ago.
The course sits on 4,000-year-old coastal sand dunes that are part of the Foveran Links Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a status that should protect the site from development, according to The Guardian.
The action group Tripping Up Trump supported local residents, while the film You’ve Been Trumped was shown in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London in an attempt to shut the project down.
However, Scottish ministers believed the financial gains would outweigh the environmental concerns. That set the stage for initial construction 17 years ago.
The venue will also host the Legends Tour’s 2025 PGA Senior Championship.
Both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour had pulled all their tournaments from Trump-associated courses after the U.S. Capitol events in January 2020. Now, according to Golfweek, the R&A is considering bringing the 2028 edition of the Open Championship to Trump Turnberry, also in Scotland.
The Scottish Championship was played for the first and only time in 2020, with Adrian Otaegui taking the title.
Donald Trump is a hardcore golf fan and has built a network of golf related properties in several countries in America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
