Cowboys’ Bench Cooper Rush for Trey Lance vs Eagles
The Dallas Cowboys are taking on the Philadelphia Eagles in an important divisional matchup on Sunday. With Dak Prescott out, and potentially sidelined for the remainder of 2024, the team has relied on Cooper Rush.

At the time of this writing, Rush has not been able to get much offense going for the Cowboys, resulting in his being benched for the young Trey Lance.
Rush and the Cowboys have been very unsuccessful on Sunday, and have not scored a single touchdown. The Eagles have run away with the score, which sits at 28-6, at the time of this writing.
In the waning moments of the third quarter, the Cowboys decided to bench Rush and see if Lance could come in and get anything going.
Lance was surprisingly traded to the Cowboys from the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. Despite Lance being pegged as the quarterback of the future for the 49ers, his skills did not translate into as starting role. In fact, Lance would fall down the depth chart with the Cowboys, and he did not see a single play in all of 2023.
During the 2024 offseason, Lance saw his fifth-year option be declined by the Cowboys, meaning he will become a free agent in 2025. Though Lance was once again lauded for someone who could unseat Prescott as the starter, that was not the case.
Lance played in a preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers, where he threw 33-for-49 passes, 323 yards, one touchdown, and five interceptions. Lance has not played the way that anyone had hoped he would throughout his professional career.
The Cowboys have been struggling mightily in 2024, including on Sunday. Rush has only completed 13-for-23 passes, and 45 yards. Dallas’ coaching staff likely finally had enough of the team not being able to produce any sort of offense, and are now set on trying to see if Lance can get anything going.
The worst part about this situation is that the Cowboys did not secure another quarterback before the NFL trade deadline wrapped up on Nov. 5. If Prescott cannot make it back this season, Dallas will be stuck with Rush and Lance for the remainder of the season.
There are some veteran quarterbacks that are not currently signed like former Tennessee Titans’ quarterback Ryan Tannehill, which is one of the very options the Cowboys can explore.
For now, the Cowboys are going to need to see if Lance can rebound the team in any slight way.
