Cowboys Connected to Trade for Star Safety Before Deadline
Leading up to Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been very vocal about being aggressive in trade discussions. It seems likely that the Cowboys will remain very active in trade talks all the way up to the deadline.
Right before the start of the season, Dallas made the blockbuster trade to send superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. That was a shocking deal, but it brought in two extra first round picks and star defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
Now, with under 24 hours remaining to make a deal, the rumor mill is starting to pick up aggressively.

Keeping that in mind, the Cowboys have been connected to a potential trade to bring in a star safety. It has been very clear by the players connected to Dallas that Jones would like to upgrade the team’s defense.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has suggested a trade for the Cowboys that would bring in Miami Dolphins star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. In his trade proposal, Knox would have Fitzpatrick and a 2026 third-round pick heading to Dallas in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick and a 2026 fifth-round selection.
“Logically, that should mean adding a player who can aid Dallas’ 30th-ranked scoring defense,” Knox wrote. “Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus would find a role for Fitzpatrick in Dallas’ secondary.”
Fitzpatrick is still a top safety in the NFL. At 28 years old, he could be a nice pickup for the Cowboys both this season and for the future potentially.
Throughout the course of the 2025 season with the Dolphins, Fitzpatrick has played in nine games. He has recorded 50 total tackles to go along with a fumble recovery, an interception, and five defended passes.
During his career, Fitzpatrick has been known to be a playmaker. He has totaled 21 interceptions and 59 defended passes in 115 career games. Those numbers would greatly strengthen the Dallas defense.

Of course, this is just an idea at this point in time. There is a chance that the Cowboys do not view Fitzpatrick as a target. But, it’s an idea that could make a ton of sense for Dallas.
Expect to hear a lot of rumors surrounding the Cowboys in the coming hours. Jones wants to be aggressive and trading for a player like Fitzpatrick would help the team accomplish that goal.
