Cubs Predicted To Swing Blockbuster Trade For $74 Million Ryan Mountcastle
The Chicago Cubs have a lot of talent, and they used the offseason to add even more. Chicago swung a blockbuster trade with the Houston Astros to acquire Kyle Tucker and there’s a chance Tucker leaves in free agency next offseason.
With that in mind, the time to win in the Windy City is right now, and the Cubs know it.
Matthew Sullivan of Athlon Sports expects the Cubs to continue to improve their roster. Sullivan recently predicted the Cubs would swing a blockbuster trade for Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle. Spotrac projects Mountcastle to sign a deal in free agency for $74 million when he gets there in 2027.

“The Cubs’ current first basemen aren’t going to challenge Mountcastle for the job. Justin Turner is 40 years old, hitting just .200, and has struggled defensively with the Cubs in his short stint,” Sullivan wrote. “The other first-baseman on the roster is Michael Busch. He’s 27 years old but hasn’t done enough to warrant keeping the first-baseman spot.
“Busch is hitting .235 with one home run and four runs batted in. While he’s got significantly more upside than Turner, he’s been inconsistent in his MLB career. Mountcastle would be the perfect mid-season acquisition for the Cubs. The Cubs need an upgrade offensively, and a stronger defensive presence at first. Mountcastle provides both, and likely at a reasonable cost.”
The Orioles have two top prospects, Coby Mayo and Samuel Basallo, who could come up through the minor leagues and be the long-term answer at first base, but they will likely only move on from Mountcastle if the price is right.
The Cubs could use the slugger in their lineup, but it would likely cost a solid prospect or two in return. If Chicago is willing to part ways with a few top prospects, this deal could make a lot of sense. It would certainly push the Cubs closer to the World Series.
