Cubs Shockingly Linked To Reunion With $2.5 Million Kyle Hendricks

Led by Kyle Tucker, the Chicago Cubs have the lineup to make a deep postseason run this season. There aren’t many teams with the talent and depth that Chicago has.

But their pitching rotation is depleted, largely due to a few injuries, so the Cubs may look for a trade partner to help boost the pitching staff.

Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently suggested the Cubs could reunite with veteran pitcher Kyle Hendricks in a blockbuster trade this season. The Cubs let Hendricks walk in free agency, and the righty signed with the Los Angeles Angels instead.

“The pitching staff, on the other hand, devolved from ‘questionable’ to downright ‘grimace-inducing’ with Wednesday’s news of Justin Steele landing on the IL with elbow tendinitis,” Miller wrote. “The Cubs already had Javier Assad (oblique) on the IL, which meant continually rolling with Ben Brown in the rotation even through his early struggles.

“And in Steele’s stead, they called up Ethan Roberts to help out with what figures to be a lot of bullpen games for the foreseeable future. Potential Solutions: Nick Martinez, Cal Quantrill, Martín Pérez, Kyle Hendricks.”

This idea makes next to zero sense. The Cubs cut ties with Hendricks at the end of last year after he was uncompetitive in their rotation. The Angels signed him to help them make a postseason push.

If Hendricks is good for the Angels, Los Angeles won’t even consider trading him. If he’s bad for the Angels, the Cubs will likely have zero interest in a reunion with the veteran.

There’s almost no world where this trade could ever come to fruition.
