Actor Cynthia Nixon denied that she was wearing a pro-Palestinian shirt during a promotional trailer for the upcoming season of HBO’s And Just Like That….
“The shirt was provided to Cynthia at an And Just Like That marketing shoot by the series wardrobe department. Any similarities to the colors are coincidence,” a rep for Nixon told Newsweek.
The image of Nixon in the shirt ignited debate on social media, where critics accused Nixon of using the show’s platform to express political views aligned with pro-Palestinian activism amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. Others, however, defended Nixon for using her platform to speak out about the war.
Newsweek reached out to Calvin Klein, the alleged designer of the shirt, by email for comment.

The promo clip, released on Tuesday, teases plotlines for season three of And Just Like That…, the sequel to Sex and the City. In one scene, Nixon’s character is seen wearing a shirt described by The Jerusalem Post as featuring “a red triangle next to the black, white and green of the Palestinian flag, as well as a red tie.”
People criticized Nixon for wearing the shirt and ignoring Hamas’ persecution of LGBTQ+ people. Nixon identifies as “queer,” and has been married to Christine Marinoni since 2012.
Other social media users, however, support the outfit choice and applauded Nixon for maintaining her support of the pro-Palestinian movement.
The shirt appears to be designed by Calvin Klein, according to a 2018 Facebook post from the designer that shows actress Cate Blanchett wearing a similar shirt to that year’s Festival de Cannes.
While HBO has not commented on whether the wardrobe was chosen for political purposes, the trailer’s timing and Nixon’s track record have drawn attention. The actress joined a hunger strike outside the White House in November 2023, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“I am a mother of Jewish children whose grandparents are Holocaust survivors. No one is safe until everyone is safe,” Nixon said during the protest, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
She was also part of the #Artists4Ceasefire campaign, signing an open letter to President Joe Biden that called on the U.S. to end arms transfers to Israel, according to The Cut.
