Dan Patrick Blasts ‘Terrible’ Chiefs-Chargers Brazil Game Decision

The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers play on Friday night in Week 1 in a huge AFC West showdown.

However, the game is in São Paulo, Brazil, as part of the NFL International Series.

The Chiefs are coming off another Super Bowl trip, although Patrick Mahomes and company lost to Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chargers snagged an AFC Wild Card spot but lost to the Houston Texans, 32-12.

This year, both teams have plenty of playoff expectations, and the Chiefs are again viewed as a Super Bowl contender.

With the game taking place in Brazil on Friday night, there should be plenty of attention on this game. On the other hand, sports analyst Dan Patrick was not happy with the decision to have this rivalry game in Brazil.

“Here’s the problem I have with this,” Patrick said. “I know we’re getting to global expansion here…The fact that the Chargers and Chiefs, a divisional rivalry game, is going to be played in Brazil is malpractice. I mean, that’s terrible.”

“That should be played in Los Angeles or Kansas City,” Patrick added. “What I am anti is a divisional game we’re going to export, and it’s Week 1. You can’t do that to the Chiefs and Chargers fans…I don’t like having opening day in Japan or Korea.”

Patrick continued by saying, “It’s not fair to the teams or its fans,” while saying this is “what the NFL is all about.”

“I just think it’s unfortunate that you have all of this build up and now you’re going to send those guys to Brazil,” Patrick concluded.

In 2024, the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers played on Friday, September 6, in the first-ever NFL game in Brazil. This year, the NFL decided to have the Chiefs and Chargers play the game, although Patrick certainly is not thrilled about that choice.

As far as this year’s NFL International Series goes, here is the rest of the slate:

  • September 28: Minnesota Vikings vs. Pittsburgh Steelers, Dublin, Ireland
  • October 5: Minnesota Vikings vs. Cleveland Browns, London
  • October 12: Denver Broncos vs. New York Jets, London
  • October 19: Los Angeles Rams vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, London
  • November 9: Atlanta Falcons vs. Indianapolis Colts, Berlin, Germany
  • November 16: Washington Commanders vs. Miami Dolphins, Madrid, Spain

So, the only rivalry and divisional matchup is the Chiefs-Chargers Week 1 showdown.

As for the Chargers and Chiefs, they will play each other on December 14 in Kansas City, which means LA loses its opportunity to host them this season.
