Dave Roberts Sends Clear Message to Critics

Last offseason, the narrative that the Los Angeles Dodgers were ruining baseball was born.

Fresh off a World Series title, the defending champions continued their winning ways in the winter by acquiring premier pitching talent. The Dodgers headlined the offseason by signing Blake Snell to a five-year, $182 million deal less than a month after the Fall Classic.

LA’s front office didn’t stop there.

The Dodgers acquired two of the top relievers on the free agent market in Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates. Moreover, the Dodgers convinced Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki to join the defending champions.

While the defending champions won the offseason, things took a turn in the regular season as injuries once again plagued LA and poor performance haunted the talented team. It began to look as if the defending champions may be the most disappointing squad of the season given their star power but underwhelming play.

Then came October, where the Dodgers have simply been a force in the postseason.

Ahead of Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, manager Dave Roberts addressed the media and was asked what he had to say in response to critics who claim the Dodgers are in the midst of buying a championship.

“There’s always critics. Yeah, I think that we’re in a big market, we’re expected to win. Our fans expect us to win. I can’t speak to what revenue we’re bringing in, but our ownership puts it back into players, a big chunk of it, which I know that’s the way it should be with all ownership groups,” Roberts said.

“I would argue — I don’t want to get too philosophical on ownership — but I do think that trying to be a competitor as Mark Walter and our ownership group is, that’s what you would want. I think that that’s what sports fans would want from everyone, to get the best of their team. And I think we do as good a job as anyone.”

After the Dodgers completed their sweep of the Brewers Friday night, Roberts doubled down.

“Before the season started, they said, ‘The Dodgers are ruining baseball,’” Roberts said. “Let’s get four more wins and really ruin baseball.”
