A video of a dog playfighting with his feline companion has gone viral on TikTok, earning over 426,000 views.
The clip shows a brown-and-white, medium‑sized dog tussling on a sofa with a black kitten. While the moment initially appears playful, some viewers believe it turns serious when the cat lets out a cry that sounds like a call for help.
That sound is quickly picked up by the kitten’s “protective big brother,” according to owner Leah, who can be heard laughing while filming the scene. Then, an orange cat then enters the frame, hissing at the dog, who looks visibly startled by the intervention.
Leah, a New York‑based photographer who posts under the handle @leah.kay.photos, described the moment as “too funny” in the caption. But the clip sparked debate in the comments.
Debate Over Whether It’s Play or Stress
While Leah states in the text layered over the video that the older feline steps up to “protect” the younger one, not everyone watching agreed.
“If the cat is hissing, they aren’t playing and you need to teach your dog to leave it,” one commenter wrote.
Another added: “Your dog is showing WAY too much aggression. The whale eyeing, the paw of the back multiple times are all signs of stress.”
Leah pushed back on those concerns, replying: “He wasn’t stressed out until our orange cat showed up on the scene—again a normal response.”
Other viewers took a lighter approach to the interaction. “The dog was like ‘stop laughing and HELP. ME,’” one user joked.
In the comments, Leah also highlighted the close bond between the animals, particularly the newest addition to the household.
“Our newest cat, the black kitten, is one VERY brave kitty! She was basically smitten by our large dog on day [one]!” she wrote. “They play and sleep together a lot as of recently.”
Why Do Cats Hiss?
Pam Johnson‑Bennett, an author with Cat Behavior Associates, previously told Newsweek that hissing is a defensive sound that indicates a feline feels scared or threatened.
“Cats try to avoid physical confrontations so they use vocal warnings, in combination with body posturing, to deter the opponent,” Johnson‑Bennett said.
But it doesn’t always mean aggression, according to Graham J. Lewis, a veterinary surgeon from the Paragon Veterinary Group.
He previously told Newsweek: “It is usually a warning before any aggression and, if you are able to understand this, then the situation can be de-escalated before the cat becomes aggressive.”
While hissing itself is not aggressive behavior, experts say it can signal that a feline may attack if the situation continues and the animal feels provoked.
