Dolphins Make Final Call on Tua Tagovailoa Amid Injury Concerns
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was limited in practice on Wednesday as he nurses injuries to his hip and left thumb.
The 27-year-old signal-caller logged a full practice on Thursday, and is now on track to play in Sunday’s Week 6 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith shared a positive outlook regarding Tagovailoa’s injuries on Thursday.
“Ultimately he’s working through stuff for the week, and we’re not overall concerned for Sunday,” Smith said, via team insider Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. “We’re working through the process to Sunday, but I mean, we’re not anticipating any setback for him for playing on Sunday.”
Miami head coach Mike McDaniel made the final call on Friday.
“Yeah,” McDaniel said when asked if Tagovailoa will start on Sunday.

Tagovailoa missed the final two games of the 2024 season after sustaining a hip injury in Week 15. McDaniel claims this most recent hip injury is unrelated to the one his quarterback suffered last year.
“Different hip than last year. Same hip, but completely different injury. Unrelated to any other hip injury,” McDaniel said on Friday.

The Dolphins are 1-4 to start the 2025 season, but the issue isn’t necessarily Tagovailoa’s play. The veteran QB has completed 70.7% of his pass attempts for 1,008 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions in his five starts. In this past Sunday’s Week 5 loss to the Carolina Panthers, he recorded 256 yards and three touchdowns on 27 of 36 passing.
The Dolphins will meet a Chargers team with something to prove on Sunday. After starting the season 3-0, Los Angeles has dropped each of its last two games — falling to the New York Giants and Washington Commanders.
Sunday’s Week 6 matchup between the Chargers and Dolphins will kickoff at 1 p.m. ET.
