Donald Trump Reacts to Fired and Rehired Nuclear Weapons Security Workers

President Donald Trump was asked Tuesday about any “concerns” regarding the recent fired-then-rehired nuclear weapons security workers who worked for the Department of Energy.

On Thursday, staff members at the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) were told that they were being fired as part of ongoing plans to reduce federal spending. The White House later said, “less than 50” NNSA employees were dismissed, and they were new workers in a probationary period who did not have civil service firing protections.

NNSA officials reportedly scrambled over the weekend to inform some of those workers that their terminations have been rescinded but struggled to find their personal contact details, according to NBC News.

A reporter asked Tuesday, “There was a big wave of probationary federal workers who were fired over the weekend. Some of these workers focused on nuclear weapons security were immediately rehired. Do you have any concerns about how these terminations took place?”

The president responded, “No, not at all. I think we have to just do what we have to do. It’s, you know, you’re going to— it’s amazing what’s been found right now. It’s amazing. In some cases, they’ll fire people then they’ll put some people back … not all of them because a lot of people were let go.”

“Don’t forget I got elected on the basis of making the government stronger and smaller.”
