Doodle Puppy Wasn’t Supposed to Grow ‘Too Big’—3 Years Later, Surprise

In a household filled with goldendoodles, the owners expected one puppy not to grow “too big” after seeing his parents, but three years later, they learned that they couldn’t be more off.

The August 23 Instagram video posted to the account @fabulous_doodle shows the dog’s transformation from when JumJum was an 8-week-old pup to him now, at age 3. The owner, Oona, told Newsweek via email that JumJum is a second-generation goldendoodle. His dad is large for the hybrid dog breed, at 106 pounds, while his mom weighs 77 pounds.

Originally bred as a guide dog in the 1960s, the standard goldendoodle—a crossbreed of a golden retriever and poodle—weighs an average of 50 to 90 pounds. But with JumJum, he never stopped growing.

“It was quite a shock how big he grew,” Oona said. “We have both his Mom and his Dad, and he’s much bigger than both of them.”

The text on the video said JumJum weighed 125 pounds, but now, a couple of months after the post, Oona said he’s up to 133.

Goldendoodle transformation from puppyhood

In both clips, JumJum sat between his dad and doggy uncle. Even as a puppy, he stood out from these two, given his black fur, which is rare because both the poodle and golden retriever must carry a recessive black gene, according to an article from Dogster. But then his size took people by surprise. He looked like a giant in comparison to the adult dogs.

“We thought it was fun that he kept growing,” Oona said.

But this gentle giant doesn’t seem to understand his size. The owner said he loves the family felines and likes to climb the cat tree. Otherwise, he’s the “sweetest and goofiest dog” that everyone loves.

Viewer Reactions

The transformation left viewers’ jaws on the floor, and as of Friday, the Instagram video had amassed over 1.6 million views, 66,700 likes and 662 comments.

“They are all gorgeous!! Doodles for the win!!” commented one user.

Another added: “Aww, he’s just a big handsome goodboy.”

A third wrote: “Oh my gosh! He’s 125 pounds? My Coco Chanel (Chani) is 75 and I think that is a lot!”
