Dozens Dead as Overtaking Buses Crash Head On
Two buses traveling in opposite directions crashed head-on as they attempted to overtake other vehicles on a highway in western Uganda, killing dozens of people, local police said. Two more vehicles were involved in the crash.
Several people were also injured in the crash after midnight local time on a highway to Gulu, a major city in northern Uganda.
Police initially put the death toll as at least 63, but later downgraded it to 46.
“One of the drivers swerved in an attempt to avoid collision, but this resulted in a head-on and side collision, causing a chain reaction that led to other vehicles losing control and overturning several times,” police said in a statement.
