ESPN Broadcaster Nails ‘Friends’ Reference With Vanderbilt’s Chandler Bing
The No. 22 Vanderbilt Commodores (26-7 overall, 11-7 in conference) punched their ticket to the SEC Tournament championship game with a 91-74 win over the No. 4 Florida Gators (26-7, 16-2) on Saturday afternoon.
After the game, ESPN’s Alyssa Lang interviewed Vanderbilt’s Chandler Bing and Tyler Tanner. Bing played 20 minutes off the bench to contribute seven points, three rebounds, and a block, while Tanner led all Commodores with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting. More importantly for Friends fans, Lang nailed her dismount.
“Could they be having any more fun here in Nashville?” Lang said before sending the broadcast back to the studio.
Vandy freshman guard Chandler Bing shares a name with the late Matthew Perry’s beloved character on Friends. Chandler’s animated emphasis on “be” in his sentences became a running gag between all of the characters during the iconic sitcom’s 10-season run from 1994 to 2004.
While Friends fans watching immediately got Lang’s reference, Bing has zero knowledge of the show that put his name in the pop cultural zeitgeist before he was even born. Bing’s bio on Vanderbilt’s official roster page lists only one thing under “Personal”: “Has never watched Friends.”

Plenty of people are watching Vanderbilt. Regardless of the SEC Tournament outcome, Vanderbilt is expected to make the 2026 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament, best known as March Madness. As of early Saturday, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi had Vanderbilt as the No. 4 seed in the East region. Last week, Andy Katz projected Vanderbilt as a No. 5 seed in the Midwest region.
But the Commodores have a chance to win their first SEC Tournament championship since the 2011-12 season. They’ll face No. 17 Arkansas (24-8, 13-5) on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST. Imagine Vanderbilt hoisting a trophy just 10 minutes down the road from its campus. Could anything be more perfect?
