The European Union (EU) said it will also pause for 90 days its planned countermeasures against President Donald Trump’s tariffs, saying it “took note” of his temporary halt on Wednesday to give time for trade negotiations.
“We took note of the announcement by President Trump,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement posted to X on Thursday morning.
“We want to give negotiations a chance. While finalising the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days.”
But she warned: “If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in. Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues. As I have said before, all options remain on the table.”
This is a breaking news story and more information will be added soon.
