Everyone Missed Kevin Costner’s Reaction to Ryan Reynolds’ Joke at SNL 50

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Kevin Costner appeared dumbfounded after Ryan Reynolds joked about his ongoing legal dispute with Justin Baldoni at the “Saturday Night Live 50th Anniversary Special”.

Nearly 15 million viewers watched the three-hour show, which aired Sunday, February 16, and celebrated 50 years of the iconic comedy sketch show. Few of them, however, caught Costner’s reaction to Reynolds’ gag.

Standing up from his position in the audience, the “Deadpool and Wolverine” star appeared as part of a planned Q+A (skip to 1:55 in the video below). Panel hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler ask Reynolds how it’s going, and he replies, “Great! Why, what have you heard?”

The response prompts laughs from the crowd, with Fey and Poehler throwing their hands up with feigned ignorance. It’s a nod to Reynolds and Lively’s widely publicized fallout with Baldoni, who’s been accused of improper conduct on the set of romantic drama “It Ends With Us”. And not everyone saw the funny side.

Upon hearing the punchline, Costner, who’s sitting behind Reynolds, casts a scrutinous glance at Lively, who’s sitting next to her husband. It’s not subtle either, turning his entire body to examine the star and get a look at her response.

The “Dances With Wolves” actor isn’t the only one whose reaction drew comments on social media. Lively herself appeared surprised by Reynolds’ joke. Her smile instantly disappeared when Reynolds dropped the punchline, and she spun around in her seat to face him, her mouth open.

She might have been going along with the joke of course, acting to amplify the moment, but commenters on social media are dubious. The subject is nothing if not sensitive, with the bitter dispute resulting in several lawsuits between Lively and Baldoni filed between December 20, 2024, and January 31, 2025.
