A dog owner has shared their surprise at finding out that their beloved pet is of a completely different genetic background to what they previously expected, sparking widespread amusement among pet lovers on Reddit.
The owner, who goes by @dinosaurwater on the platform, had shared that they previously believed their female dog was mostly golden retriever. “Everyone assumes she’s 99 percent golden, but this sweet fluffy creature turns out to be quite a mix,” they wrote in the post, before going on to share that the pup is, in fact, a cross between at least two other breeds. The text was accompanied by an image of the adorable canine, who has noticeable golden retriever traits in her appearance.
Viewers were also able to see a screengrab of the DNA test results which showed that the dog is just 26.6 percent purebred golden retriever, with 26.5 percent chow ancestry and 16.1 percent American pit bull terrier ancestry; 30.8 percent of her DNA was classed as “supermutt,” a term used to describe dogs with a complex and mixed genetic ancestry from several breeds.
The post had been shared to the r/doggydna subreddit, where pet owners frequently post lighthearted plot twists about their own dogs’ ancestral lineage, to the delight of viewers online.
“We are so surprised,” the dog’s owner shared. The post has been upvoted more than 350 times to date and has invited comments from Reddit users keen to weigh in on the results.
Several viewers, perhaps with a keen eye for spotting dog breeds due to their time spent on this subreddit, shared that they feel the canine does not look like a typical purebred golden retriever, despite what the owner was led to believe.
“I’ve seen so many yellow, longhaired, floppy-eared dogs turn out to be 0 percent golden retriever on here that I was surprised she is part Golden,” one viewer said.
“Same, I was like ‘oh that’s a pit chow’ and my flabbers were fully gasted at seeing any golden in there,” another added.
“Same! Fluffy pit chow was my thought,” a third viewer shared.
“I guessed chow mix immediately, I’m more surprised she has any golden than that she isn’t mostly golden lol [laugh out loud]. But I can see that too,” a fourth commented.
A few pet owners took to sharing images of their own furry companions who carry the similar DNA results to the one featured in this post.
“Looks like our girl Sophie, a lot of the same breeds,” one viewer said, attaching an image of their own canine to the comment.
