Exclusive: Frank Gore on 49ers Being Resilient, Current Favorite RBs, and the HoF

San Francisco 49ers legend Frank Gore is one of the best running backs the game has ever seen, and he spent the majority of his career in the Bay Area. Through the 2005 to 2014 seasons, his tough-running style led to five Pro Bowl nods, an All-Pro nod, and a potential soon-to-be Hall of Fame nod.

Gore sat down with Newsweek Sports to discuss his partnership with Lowe’s, his career, the resilience of the 2025 49ers, and the potential of being in the Hall of Fame.

Gore partnered with Lowe’s for their “Earn Your Sunday” campaign. A trailer featuring Madden games and gear inspired by Lowe’s Home Team members like Justin Jefferson, Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, and more is also featured. With the trailer headed to Levi’s Stadium, the 49ers legend will be on hand to showcase the event.

What can you tell me about your partnership with Lowe’s?

Lowe's trailer for NFL Sunday

“Lowe’s, you know, it’s every Sunday night game. Now, you know, they’re going to different cities. They have a trailer with Madden games, also. But this week, it’s at Levi’s Stadium. I’ll be there, so I need everyone to come out and show love and just have fun.”

What does it mean for this partnership to be at Levi’s Stadium with the 49ers?

“It means everything, man. And I’m happy that Lowe’s brought me back on board with him. Because I also, seven years ago, when I was in Miami, when they had a Super Bowl down in Miami. I did some things with Lowe’s that went great. But, you know, I’m happy that we’re in the Bay Area. I can go out and meet some of the fans before the game, before we go kick Atlanta behind.”

How do you feel about the 2025 49ers?

“I feel great. At first, new team, didn’t know what it would be. But one thing I always knew was that we have a great head coach, great GM, they can get the job done. But I will say, you know, we may have a lot of injuries but with our new team, man, they fight, man, and you know, we are 4-2 right now. So I think we’re sitting in a good place. You know, we’ve been in every game, finding ways to win, and, you know, and that’s a plus, but I feel good about our team.”

Who do you think is the biggest threat to the 49ers in the NFC?

“I got to say the Eagles. You know, they’re the champion, Super Bowl champion. Let me see who else good team out there. I think Green Bay is a good team. But I really don’t really, you know, care about the other teams long as we’re ready to play, man. I know Kyle [Shanahan] is gonna put a great game plan in, and we’re gonna have a shot, we’re gonna have a shot, and we’ll be fine every game long, like I told you, as long as Kyle Shanahan is healthy, we are gonna be alright.

What does it mean to be nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

“It’s a blessing, you know, coming out of college, having two ACLs, people doubting me on two shoulders, saying that, you know, I won’t be in the league no more than two or three years. And you know, God bless me to play 16 and not just play, but be a big name in the NFL, do great things in the NFL, man. And now I’m eligible for the Hall of Fame. And you know, and you know, we’ll see. But man, it’s a blessing. I’m blessed. Blessing for real.”

How do you feel about your son being in the NFL and carrying on that tough-running Gore name?

“I feel good, you know. I just, you know, I know that he belongs in the NFL. I know his path has been different from mine, but I know he has been raised right. And like I tell him, just stay ready, and he works hard every day. Buffalo got some great guys in the backfield and but I told him, once he stays ready and his number gets called, you know, he’ll go out there and do his thing. And I know he will, because, you know, his daddy raised him right.”

Who are some of your favorite running backs right now?

“There’s a lot of great young guys right now. Bijan, Saquon, Christian, kid from Detroit, Gibbs. My boy Jonathan Taylor is killing it. So, I’m just happy the NFL realized that they need a real running back. Man, oh my young boy. James Cook, doing his thing, you know, from Miami. But it’s a lot of great ones, man. I don’t like who’s better. Or, you know, because I feel like, as a running back position, it’s all about the situation of teams, you know what I mean, how the team is set up … Derrick Henry. I appreciate how those boys are keeping it going.”

Do you ever plan on getting back in the boxing ring?

Oh, I’m done with it. When I really had to, you know, when I really did a real camp, that’s when I knew that it was too aggressive for me, just because me playing football for 16 years, and the way you really have to train to be a boxer, you know, it’s just too much contact. And I just had to be real with myself that, you know, I already took a lot of hits in the NFL. I can’t be 35 or 36, taking more hits to the head. So I had to, I had to leave it alone.”
