Flood Watch Issued for Bay Area Counties Due to Potential Heavy Rain

The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Francisco has issued a Flood Watch for multiple Bay Area counties due to the potential for excessive rainfall from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. The watch covers Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties.

Why It Matters

The incoming storm is expected to bring significant rainfall across the region, with up to 5 inches predicted in higher elevations. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas are advised to prepare for possible flooding, poor drainage and hazardous road conditions. The alert comes as California continues to deal with the impact of frequent atmospheric rivers that have increased landslide risks and infrastructure strain.

What To Know

According to the NWS, the Flood Watch is effective from January 30 at 9:17 p.m. PST until February 2 at 10 p.m. PST. The areas expected to be impacted include San Francisco, the North Bay Interior Mountains, the Santa Cruz Mountains and the East Bay Hills. Urban flooding in city streets and disruptions to transportation routes are likely.

Local emergency officials have advised residents to take precautions, including clearing storm drains, securing outdoor belongings, and staying informed through emergency alerts. Drivers are warned against attempting to cross flooded roadways, as even a few inches of moving water can be hazardous.
