The former 14-year NBA veteran and former Sacramento Kings star and his agent negotiated the agreement with school officials in recent days. This will be the former veteran’s coach’s second go as a head coach.

Bibby previously spent six seasons at Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix, Arizona. That high school was where Bibby made a name for himself, leading the school to its first state championship team as a student in 1996. Bibby then spent the next two seasons at the University of Arizona.

The 46-year-old is a former No. 2 overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft. The Vancouver Grizzlies selected him. While that is the case, Bibby is known more for his time in Northern California, as a King. He was traded after the 2001 season and spent the next seven seasons in Sacramento.

As a King, Bibby averaged 17.6 points per game, 3.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.2 steals while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from three in 476 games. In his career, Bibby averaged 14.7 points per game, 3.1 rebounds, and 5.5 assists in 1001 games.

Bibby helped lead the Kings to one Western Conference Finals berth and two West semifinal runs. The 2001-2002 Kings are considered one of the best teams to never win a championship.

As for the Hornets of Sacramento State, they will open a new basketball facility on campus next fall. According to Charania, the university president, Luke Wood, was aggressive in his approach to the athletic programs, which resulted in hiring Bibby.

The Hornets are coming off a horrid 2024-25 season. They finished last in the Big Sky Conference with a 7-25 record and a 3-15 conference record. They finished the season on a five-game losing streak.

The tide is expected to turn as Bibby is now at the helm.
