Former Super Bowl Champion Emerges as Favorite for Giants Head Coaching Job
Following a disappointing 2-8 start to the NFL season, the New York Giants parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll on Monday.
Daboll, who arrived as an offensive architect and even won NFL Coach of the Year after a surprising 9-7-1 debut and a playoff victory in 2022, finished his Giants tenure with an overall record of 20-40-1, falling well short of expectations.
Despite a bounce-back in 2022, the Giants failed to build sustained momentum, bottoming out at 3-14 in 2024 and continuing to blow late leads this year, leading ownership to determine that a new direction was required.
With Mike Kafka stepping in as interim, Wednesday brought word that Super Bowl-winning coach Mike McCarthy is the early betting favorite for the Giants job at 7-1 (+700).
Kafka and Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak sit behind him at 8-1 (+800), according to ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio.

McCarthy brings a championship resume (Super Bowl XLV with the Green Bay Packers) and decades of head-coaching experience split between Green Bay and the Dallas Cowboys.
He also brings a proven background in quarterback development, shaped by years as a position coach and reinforced by his decades of success with stars like Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and Dak Prescott.
Across 18 seasons as an NFL head coach, he holds a career coaching record of 174-112, which includes nine playoff appearances with the Packers and three with the Cowboys; he’s had just five losing seasons over that span.
New York used its first-round pick (No. 25 overall) this year on rookie QB Jaxson Dart and already has a number of other young playmakers on both sides of the ball.
This includes second-year Pro Bowl receiver Malik Nabers, rookie back Cam Skattebo, No. 3 draft pick Abdul Carter, former fifth overall pick Kayvon Thibodeaux, and 27-year-old linebacker Brian Burns, currently tied for the league lead in sacks with 11.
Put simply, the next head coach steps into a marquee role in a major market, with a young quarterback to mold and a supporting cast capable of early success, a more enticing situation than many other roles expected to become available.
