Former Yankees, Angels, Mets All-Star Infielder Dies at 81

Sandy Alomar Sr., father of Sandy Alomar Jr. and Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar, has died at 81, according to Sar Del Valle Hernández.

“The information was confirmed by historian and family friend Jossie Alvarado, as well as by the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation,” Hernández reported on Monday.

Alomar played for the Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers in his 15-year playing career. He was an All-Star with the Angels in 1970. He spent the most time in his career with the Angels and Yankees after making his debut with the Milwaukee Braves in 1964.

Alomar played in 1,481 big league games. He spent most of his career at second base, but also spent some time at shortstop and third base. His sons are two of the most recognized names in the history of Puerto Rican baseball.

In his career, he hit 13 home runs and collected 282 RBIs. A 15-year career in the big leagues is no small feat.

He also had a lengthy coaching career. Alomar retired from playing in 1978, with his final two seasons coming with the Rangers. He then served as a coach for the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, New York Mets and San Diego Padres after his playing career was over.

Both of his sons went on to enjoy long careers in MLB. Sandy Alomar Jr. was a six-time All-Star, Rookie of the Year Award winner, Gold Glover and All-Star Game MVP.

Roberto Alomar was a 12-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, 10-time Gold Glover, four-time Silver Slugger and All-Star Game MVP. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2011. Alomar Sr. was also a highly regarded manager in Puerto Rico and spent time managing in the Minor Leagues.
