Gavin Newsom Reacts to Report of Donald Trump’s New California Oil Drilling Plan
California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Tuesday dismissed reports of President Donald Trump’s plan to expand oil drilling off the state’s coast, calling the proposal “dead on arrival in California.”
The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that the Republican’s administration could announce plans as soon as this week that would allow drilling off the California coast, as well as around Alaska and the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
Speaking at a news conference in Brazil, Newsom, a Democrat, said the state would “absolutely” challenge the plan in court if it is finalized. He criticized Trump for excluding Florida from the proposal while targeting California and other coastal states.
“He didn’t promote it off the coast of Florida,” Newsom said as reported by the Times. “That says everything about Donald Trump.”
