Gavin Newsom Vents at Senate Democrats Over Shutdown Vote: ‘Betrayal’

California Governor Gavin Newsom—a likely contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination—accused the group of Senate Democrats who voted with Republicans on a deal that may end the longest federal government shutdown in history of “capitulation” and “betrayal”.

The breakaway group of Democratic Senators defied Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and backed a compromise deal that would guarantee a vote on extending the expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits at the heart of the shutdown standoff. Schumer wanted the extension itself guaranteed in exchange for Democratic votes to reopen the government.

“Tonight’s Senate vote on the federal government shutdown should have been a time for strength,” Newsom said in a post on X. “Instead we saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans. The American people need more from their leaders.”
