George Clooney Makes Unexpected Career Move

George Clooney may not be ready to retire from acting, but there’s one thing he no longer has interest in: Romantic movies.

“Look, I’m 63 years old. I’m not trying to compete with 25-year-old leading men. That’s not my job. I’m not doing romantic films anymore,” he said on the Sunday, March 23, episode of 60 Minutes.

Outside of his age, Clooney didn’t share any additional reasoning for his decision to not accept roles in the romance genre. The last time that he acted in a film that could be considered a romance was in 2022 — Ticket to Paradise, in which he starred alongside Julia Roberts.

Clooney is best known for his work in films like Michael Clayton and Up in the Air, both of which are not comedy films.

At this point in his career, Clooney is adapting to change and trying out new things — like Broadway. His new stage show, Good Night, and Good Luck — based off of the 2005 film, which Clooney co-wrote — opens on April 3.

He plays the role of a news reporter named Edward R. Murrow. The movie and Broadway show tell a story of how Murrow and his producer “take a stand and challenge [Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin] and expose him for the fear monger he was,” according to IMDb. Clooney even dyed his hair brown, forgoing his classic salt and pepper locks, presumably for the role.

There’s already a great deal of buzz surrounding Clooney’s new gig, which began previews at the Winter Garden Theatre on Wednesday, March 12. But Broadway is a completely new world for the actor, who has admitted to having jitters.

“I mean, look at this place. This is proper old Broadway and it’s exciting to be here,” Clooney said on 60 Minutes. “Let’s not kid ourselves: it’s nerve-wracking,” he continued, adding that he planned on seating his wife, Amal Clooney, in the “very, very, very back” of the theater as to help alleviate some of his nerves.
