A former top prospect of the San Francisco Giants has found a new home with a National League foe.
There was a time when infielder Marco Luciano was the No. 1 prospect for San Francisco. He was ranked as San Francisco’s top prospect in 2021 and 2022 by MLB.com. He dropped down and was the team’s No. 2 prospect behind lefty pitcher Kyle Harrison in 2023 and 2024.
Unfortunately, his time with the organization didn’t go as planned, and it ended on Friday. Luciano was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates, as reflected on his official MLB.com page.
Luciano made his professional debut back in 2019 in the Giants organization as a 17-year-old. He worked his way up through the system and made his big league debut in 2023. Luciano has 41 games of big league experience under his belt across the 2023 and 2024 campaigns. He wasn’t able to live up to the hype with San Francisco and slashed .217/.286/.304 with zero homers, three RBIs, eight doubles, 14 runs scored, and 45 strikeouts.
The 24-year-old saw action defensively both at second base and third base in the big leagues with San Francisco. Now, he is going over to Pittsburgh, and the Giants can turn the page on the former top prospect.
In 2023 and 2024, Harrison and Luciano were the team’s top prospects, and now neither is with the team any longer.
