Giants Owner Makes Huge Announcement Regarding Future of HC Brian Daboll, GM Joe Schoen
New York Giants owner John Mara made a big announcement Wednesday night regarding the futures of head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.
Mara, who was speaking at the premiere of “The Duke: The Giant Life of Wellington Mara,” said he has no plans to make any changes during or after this season. He said he’s committed to both Daboll and Schoen, and has confidence in them turning things around in New York.

“Obviously we’re all very disappointed with where we are right now,” Mara said. “But I’m gonna say one thing: We are not making any changes this season. And I do not anticipate making any changes in the offseason, either.”
He preached patience in this process of turning around the Giants.
Mara has gone through a carousel of coaches over the last decade. Since Tom Coughlin’s final season in 2015, the Giants have had five coaches: Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo (interim), Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge, and now Daboll. None of the four previous coaches lasted more than two seasons.
Daboll is currently in his third season with New York. After leading the team to a surprise playoff appearance in 2022, going 9-7-1 and upsetting the 13-4 Vikings in the first round, the Giants have gone the wrong way. In 2023, the Giants went 6-11. Through seven games this season, the Giants are 2-5.
Despite the struggles, Mara doesn’t want to make any rash decisions regarding Daboll or Schoen. He wants to give both his head coach and general manager the opportunity to turn things around, and build a roster themselves.
Neither Daboll nor Schoen were around when the Giants drafted quarterback Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Schoen was hired in Jan. 2022, and his first act as general manager was hiring Daboll.
Schoen and Daboll are in their third year together, and feel like they’re putting the pieces together to build a contender. However, without strong quarterback play, the team is going to struggle — and it remains to be seen if Jones is the right guy for the job.
Schoen and Daboll were responsible for extending Jones on a four-year, $160 million deal in March 2023. However, the Giants were coming off a surprise playoff appearance, and felt they needed to bring some stability to the team. Unfortunately, Jones would only play in six games in 2023 before suffering a season-ending torn ACL.
The 2024 season feels like Jones’ last to make a positive impression on Daboll and Schoen. If not, they could look for a new franchise quarterback via the draft or free agency.
Whether Jones is the quarterback of the Giants in 2025 remains to be seen. However, Mara seems pretty confident in his general manager and head coach having more time to right the ship in New York.
