Giants Sign 31-Year-Old Reliever After Second Stint With Blue Jays

The San Francisco Giants bolstered their bullpen on Saturday by signing former Toronto Blue Jays reliever Ryan Borucki, according to his official transactions log.

The Giants’ bullpen has been plagued with injuries, turning spring training into a rebuilding effort for the team. San Francisco is particularly shorthanded when it comes to left-handed relievers, especially with Reiver Sanmartin out for a few months, making Borucki’s signing that much more important for the bullpen.

Borucki, 31, is an eight-year MLB veteran, who most recently played for the Toronto Blue Jays. The veteran reliever began his career with the Blue Jays in 2018 as a starting pitcher, but quickly transitioned to a role out of the bullpen. Borucki opened last season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but returned to Toronto after being designated for assignment in August.

Though Borucki struggled last season with the Pirates, posting a 5.28 ERA in 35 appearances, he excelled in his short return with the Blue Jays, not allowing a single run across 4 1/3 innings pitched in four appearances and will be joining the Giants on a one-year contract.

Borucki likely will serve as San Francisco’s No. 2 lefty hurler in the bullpen behind Erik Miller. Bringing in the veteran reliever may not be a massive flashy move for the Giants, but he could be a good depth addition for their bullpen.

In a corresponding move to clear space for Borucki on the Giants’ 40-man roster, the team transferred Hayden Birdsong (Tommy John surgery) to the 60-day injured list.
