HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Trailer Hit With Heavy Criticism as ‘Soulless’
The first trailer for the new ‘Harry Potter’ HBO series has dropped, and everyone has an opinion on it.
In the two-minute teaser, we see Dominic McLaughlin don the iconic scar and glasses of Harry Potter, taking the torch from Daniel Radcliffe as he begins his seven-season journey as the titular character.
Although the trailer went viral instantly, with millions upon millions of views pouring in from every corner of the internet, the reception wasn’t unanimously positive.

From the casting choices to the cinematography to the music, fans of the series and detractors alike took shots at the trailer.
“They copied and pasted the movie, used a digital tool that makes every actor look more bland, reduced brightness by 75%, and replaced the iconic score with generic slop,” posted Tom Zohar on X. “Brilliant work everyone.”
“This is even worse than I expected,” added another user on X. “Wow. The most unnecessary series of all time.
“What even was the point?” asked another viewer of the trailer. “A beat for beat remake with absolutely no visual difference to the originals? What a waste of time. Hopefully these kids find success because whatever this is was a waste of their time as well.”
“Against all odds, I was fully unprepared for just how off-putting and uncomfortable this would be to watch,” posted Georgia Coley, whose comment has over one million views on its own. “Something about seeing such a classically-crafted, iconic film series translated into the aesthetics of a modern HBO prestige streamer show just feels uncanny valley wrong.”
The first season, called “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” will have an earlier release than expected, the trailer announcing that it will be out on Christmas Day instead of early 2027, as previously stated.
