Hollywood Celebrity Narrowly Avoids Crash After Spin in Racing Debut at Indianapolis

Keanu Reeves made his professional auto racing return at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, competing in the Toyota GR Cup, a spec-racing series featuring GR86 cars.

During the 45-minute race, the 60-year-old actor spun out exiting turn nine but managed to avoid any collision, skillfully re-entering the race without injury. Despite the incident, Reeves had earlier moved up to 21st from his starting position of 31st.

Reeves ultimately finished 25th in his No. 92 BRZRKR car and successfully avoided a first-lap crash in turn 14. The Matrix star will race again on Sunday in the series, which supports this weekend’s Indy 8 Hour sports car event.

The Canadian actor is promoting his graphic novel ‘The Book of Elsewhere’ while teaming up with Cody Jones from the ‘Dude Perfect’ YouTube channel for the race, which boasts a whopping 60 million subscribers.

Reeves’ love for all things automotive is well-known, extending beyond his acting career to a remarkable collection of motorcycles and his own custom motorcycle brand. A regular presence at Formula 1 and MotoGP events, Reeves’ passion for racing and engines is as prominent as his film work.

Reeves also narrated a docuseries about the iconic Brawn Formula 1 team. Titled ‘Brawn: The Impossible F1 Story’, the team was notably acquired for just £1. When discussing the series, which premiered in November last year, Reeves expressed his deep fascination with the team’s extraordinary journey, emphasizing the dramatic underdog story that captured the hearts of F1 fans worldwide. He said at the time, to GiveMeSport.com:

“When I got told the story about this team that was bought for £1 went on to win the championship, I was like ‘what?’. It started with that, and then we got into what it meant with the financial crisis, the team splitting apart and maybe ending Formula 1. As I learned more and more about it, it became such a huge canvas including racing on track and off the track with the politics and the team owners.

“All the drivers and team dynamics, even the relationships between the engineers and Ross Brawn coming in with all his championships. There are so many cool elements that went into the story, and obviously with happened that year it was almost impossible to not make it extraordinary.”

The celebrity is no stranger to the racetrack, as he previously competed in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach’s celebrity race, winning the event in 2009. After his weekend of racing, Reeves is set to attend a 30th anniversary screening of Speed in Los Angeles on Tuesday, alongside co-star Sandra Bullock.
