How Did ‘Yellowstone’ Season 5 End? Series Finale Explained
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Yellowstone season 5 has officially concluded, thus ending Jamie and Beth’s ongoing feud.
On Sunday, December 15, the series finale of the Western drama aired, wrapping up many storylines.
Kacey (Luke Grimes) sells the Dutton Ranch to reservation leader Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham), finally returning the land to the Native American people. Kacey sells the land for $1.25 per acre, the same price his ancestors purchased it for in 1883.
However, there were a few caveats Rainwater had to agree to: Kayce, his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille), and son Tate (Brecken Merrill) would get to reside in East Camp, and the land could never be developed or sold. After agreeing to the terms, Rainwater jokes, “Congratulations, you just made the worst land deal since my people sold Manhattan.”
At John’s (Kevin Costner) funeral — which son Jamie (Wes Bentley) did not attend — daughter Beth (Kelly Reilly) promises to avenge him. Afterward, Beth rushes to Jamie’s home to attack him. The siblings get into a brutal fight, both beating each other bloody. Amid the fight, Beth reveals to Jamie that they sold the ranch to the reservation for a mere $1.1 million. Beth laughs at her brother, and declares, “All your dreams, Jamie, all of your f***ing ambitions — just f***ing gone just like that.”
Jamie, stunned, unleashes all his force on Beth, and it seems like he is about to kill her — until Rip (Cole Hauser) barges in and pulls him off her. Beth, instead, kills Jamie by plunging a knife into his chest and tells him, “I’m gonna be the last thing you ever f***ing see.” Beth kept her promise from season 5, episode 10, where she told her brother she would be the last thing he saw.
Beth and Rip spin the truth to the cops, who think Jamie attacked his sister and ran away after she accused him of being implicated in their father’s death. Rip dumps Jamie’s body at the train station and lights his car on fire, so it looks like Jamie was trying to get rid of evidence. From her hospital bed, Beth watches a news report on TV that reveals that the state wants to impeach Jamie as Attorney General.
In the end, Beth gets a fresh start as she goes to live on a new ranch with Rip and Carter (Finn Little).
The second season of the Yellowstone spinoff 1923, a prequel to the series, will premiere in February 2025.
