How Gen Z Mom Gets Revenge on Noisy Neighbors Applauded: ‘Had Enough’

A mom decided to take creative steps to combat her noisy neighbors after she had asked them multiple times to keep the disturbances down.

Reddit user u/Ginger_Floydian shared a post titled “Had enough of noisy neighbors took it into my own hands” in the popular r/pettyrevenge group. In the post, which received more than 12,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments, she said that she moved into her block of apartments three months ago with her 2-year-old son.

Since she arrived, she has found a group of young adults “sitting on the stairwell behind my bedroom smoking, laughing loudly, running about.” She writes in the post: “One of them lives above me and plays loud music that they rap along to past hours constantly.

“I’ve tried reasoning and explaining I have a 2 year old and I am disabled, we deserve peace [but] to no avail. I’ve called noise patrol who they have just argued with and continued once they have left.”

One night, she decided she “had enough” and decided to get revenge by blaring “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses and turning the volume up to 100. She then started screaming the lyrics and once the song ended, she turned the TV off and heard one of the young men say “what the f***?” and silence followed.

“I said to my husband if this continues I will turn my sound system on and play baby shark on a loop,” she wrote in the post. “I’m not playing games anymore. Best part is, the two year old is still fast asleep.”

Diane Gottsman, national etiquette expert from the Protocol School of Texas, told Newsweek: “It seems like the neighbor who was being assaulted with noise and music, found their resolution by giving them a dose of their own medicine. While it may have worked in this case, there’s always the risk of inciting anger and rage.

“If going to the proper channels does not help, continuing to find ways to handle the situation in an orderly and respectful manner is still the best, and safest course,” Gottsman said. “There is also the option of finding another apartment when their lease is runs its course. I know this may not be the best financial or physical alternative, but once daily peace of mind is worth some thought.”

Neighbor relations is an ever-changing dynamic; over the years, there have been shifts in how people relate to their neighbors. A 2018 survey from the Pew Research Center found that Americans aged 65 and above are more likely to know and interact with more of their neighbors than younger generations.

Reddit users reacted to the mom’s tactics in the comments section of her post.

One person, u/Combob2019, commented: “I wish I had thought of this a few years ago with our horrifically loud neighbors.”

Another, u/CoderJoe1, wrote, “Baby Shark? Calm down, Satan,” to which u/ForsakenBluePanda argued: “No. Turn it up!”
