Columbus arrives in Pittsburgh struggling, having lost five in a row and seven of their last eight, most recently a 1-0 shutout loss to the Florida Panthers in overtime. There is reason for optimism, however, as the league’s 25th-ranked scoring defense has allowed just three goals in their last two games. 24-year-old winger Kirill Marchenko leads the team in goals with 25, with defenseman Zach Werenski leading in assists with 49.
The Penguins are making a late-season rush toward a playoff spot, but with only 14 games remaining, they need help. They’ve won four of their last five, although their most recent game was a disappointing 4-2 loss to the New York Islanders in which Pittsburgh couldn’t hold onto a 2-0 lead in the third period. Sidney Crosby scored his 24th goal of the season, with Joona Koppanen netting his first.
This game represents the third and final regular-season matchup between the teams, with Columbus winning both of the previous matchups.
