A showdown for the Mountain West Conference lead lost some of its luster when both Boise State (6-3) and San Diego State (7-2) took their first conference losses last week, with both teams 4-1 in the MWC entering play at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night.

San Diego State comes off a 38-6 blowout loss at Hawaii last week in which it was held to a pair of first-half field goals from Gabriel Plascencia. Lucky Sutton ran for 78 yards on 18 carries, while Jayden Denegal was just 10-of-27 through the air for 132 yards and threw two interceptions. The Aztecs surrendered a pick-six and had the second-half kickoff returned for a touchdown.
Boise State, meanwhile, was thumped 30-7 by visiting Fresno State last week, with the Bulldogs pulling away in the second half after leading 10-7 at the break. Max Cutforth’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Chase Penry tied the game with 2:07 left in the second quarter and proved to be the only score for the Broncos, who were held to 193 yards in their first home loss in more than 20 years, ending streaks of 16 straight wins at home and 14 consecutive conference victories. Cutforth finished 14-of-29 for 106 yards and a pair of picks while Malik Sherrod picked up 67 yards on 10 carries.
The Broncos have won three straight games in the series to take a 6-4 all-time lead, beating San Diego State at home 56-24 on Nov. 1, 2024, in the most recent matchup.
