Keito Mombetsu threw five perfect innings for the Hanshin Tigers as the Chicago Cubs were shut out in their 3-0 loss during their first exhibition game of the Tokyo Series. Kyle Tucker, Justin Turner, and Dansby Swanson will look to wake up their bats in this matchup against the Yomiuri Giants before they start to play games that will count towards their regular season record.
Shota Imanaga and Seiya Suzuki are two of the most popular players in Japan this week as the two Japanese stars play in front of the fans in their home country. Imanaga is projected to take the mound against the Dodgers on Tuesday, and will look to start strong in 2025 after dominating MLB competition in his first season with the Cubs. As a rookie, Imanaga posted a 15-3 record with a 2.91 ERA while being selected for the National League All-Star team.
The Cubs have failed to make the playoffs in each of their previous four season, and hope the offseason additions of Turner and Tucker can help get them back to playing October baseball. The two veteran hitters have five combined All-Star appearances, and will provide some much needed depth to Chicago’s lineup this upcoming season.
The Yomiuri Giants will look to bounce back from their 5-1 loss to the Dodgers in their first game of the Tokyo Series.
