Mexico will host (or at least co-host) a World Cup for the third time this summer and welcomes Portugal to the Estadio Azteca on Saturday in the latest leg of its prep. El Tri has won each of its three friendlies thus far in 2026 and will hope to keep that record intact all the way through to this summer’s main spectacle.
Perhaps to the pleasure of many home fans, the Selecao will travel to Mexico City without the talents of captain Cristiano Ronaldo. The 41-year-old could not recover from a hamstring injury in time to be fit for this weekend’s fixture and will watch from the sidelines as his team-mates look to build on a 9-1 hammering of Armenia back in November.
As fate would have it, the top scorer in Liga MX has been handed the reins to replace Ronaldo in the squad. The Toluca sensation has 55 goals in 81 appearances for his Mexican employer and has returned to the Selecao squad after six years in the wilderness as he looks to make his mark at the international level.
West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes has also been called up for a potential Portugal debut. Mexico chief Javier Aguirre has a first-time call-up of his own after selecting Real Betis midfielder Alvaro Fidalgo, while Edson Alvarez, Diego Lainez, Santiago Gimenez, and San Diego FC winger Hirving Lozano are among the most notable names missing.
