Zach Hyman notched his seventh career hat trick and Connor McDavid assisted on all four Edmonton goals on Thursday night as the Oilers beat the visiting Detroit Red Wings 4-1. Stuart Skinner made 27 saves, and Mattias Ekholm also lit the lamp. Leon Draisaitl notched a pair of assists as well. On Friday, Edmonton addressed its long-standing problem in goal, acquiring Tristan Jarry and forward Sam Poulin from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak, and a 2029 second-round pick.
The Maple Leafs blew a 2-0 lead on Thursday night, dropping a 3-2 decision in overtime to the visiting San Jose Sharks. Toronto, already without top defensemen Chris Tanev and Brandon Carlo, lost Oliver Ekman-Larsson early in the third period after his left ankle was landed on by a Sharks player along the boards. Dakota Joshua and Auston Matthews scored the goals for the Leafs, who led 2-0 in the middle of the second period before San Jose made its comeback. Dennis Hildeby stopped 29 shots in the loss.
Draisaitl leads the Oilers with 17 goals while McDavid has 16 to go with a team-high 48 points. Jarry, expected to make his Edmonton debut against the Leafs, was 9-3-1 with a shutout in 14 games and 13 starts for Pittsburgh, putting up a .909 save percentage and 2.66 goals-against average. Matthews and John Tavares share the team lead for Toronto with 13 goals each, with William Nylander scoring 11 and topping the club with 34 points. With top two goalies Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll on injured reserve, Hildeby is 2-2-3 with a shutout in 10 appearances and six starts, notching a .933 save percentage and 2.25 GAA.
