Indiana returns to the NBA Finals for the first time since the 1999-00 season, when they were defeated in six games by the Los Angeles Lakers. While they have three ABA championships, they have yet to secure their first NBA Championship.
The Pacers have been a great story, as they started the season 10-15 and still had a losing record (16-18) as the calendar turned to 2025. They’d go 34-14 the rest of the way before a playoff run that has seen them run through the Milwaukee Bucks in five games, the Cleveland Cavaliers in five, and the New York Knicks in six.
The Thunder owned the league’s best regular season record (68-14), leaning on the league MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and a cast of two-way phenoms that earned the Thunder the No. 3 ranking in offensive rating and No. 1 in defensive rating.
After an easy sweep of the Memphis Grizzlies in Round 1, the Thunder were taken to seven games in Round 2 by the Denver Nuggets before a five-game series win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Oklahoma City last went to the NBA Finals in 2011-12 (a loss to the Miami Heat), and have won one championship, in 1978-79, when they were the Seattle Supersonics.
