Texas lost to Tennessee in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament and finished with a disappointing 6-12 conference record, but they only lost three games this year to non-SEC opponents. The Southeastern Conference was one of the toughest to play in this season, making the Longhorns a battle-tested team heading into March Madness.
Xavier also lost in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament, but they put up a good fight, only losing by two points to a solid Marquette team. Ryan Conwell had his best game of the season, scoring 38 points on 7-11 shooting from three-point range.
Tre Johnson is the player to watch in this matchup. As a freshman, Johnson led his team in scoring with 19.8 points per game, which ranked 21st in the nation. He is a big-time prospect who can move his name up the NBA draft boards with a solid showing in the NCAA Tournament. He is a bit streaky, only scoring 11 points in their loss to Tennessee, but he had scored 39 points combined over his previous two games.
Zach Freemantle is the leading scorer for the Musketeers, and he, along with Conwell, gives Xavier a one-two punch that could cause problems for opposing teams during tournament play. Freemantle does a little bit of everything, and while he does most of his work in the paint, he can also step outside and knock down threes at 6’9″.
