UNC Wilmington earned its spot in the field with a Coastal Athletic Association Championship game win over Delaware. The Seahawks have won 15 of their last 17 games, making them dangerous this time of the year, but they face a Red Raiders team that has been one of the top programs in the country all season long. Texas Tech has only lost eight games this year and finished second in their conference standings, playing in a much tougher Big 12.
JT Toppin will try to bounce back from a poor performance against Arizona, in which he only scored 11 points. It was the first time in five games that Texas Tech’s leading scorer failed to reach 20 points. As only a sophomore, Toppin was one of the best players in his conference, averaging 18.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. His preference in the paint might be a lot for the Seahawks to handle.
UNC Wilmington scores nearly 80 points per game, making this a potential shootout against a Red Raiders team that is 31st in the nation in scoring. Donovan Newby has to try and stay hot after scoring 41 points combined over his team’s past two games. Newby was 5-12 from the three-point line in their semifinal win over Charleston, and he might need a similar type of effort for the Seahawks to pull off the upset.
