When women’s basketball tips off at the Paris Olympics 2024, there will be one clear favorite.
The United States has historically been a powerhouse in men’s basketball, but the women are even more dominant—winners of seven straight Olympic gold medals and nine out of its last 11. The American women are ranked No. 1 by FIBA.
But countries like No. 2 China, No. 3 Australia and No. 4 Spain will all try to upend the United States before it can claim its eighth straight gold.

A’ja Wilson (USA): Wilson is arguably the best player in the world currently. The two-time WNBA MVP (2020, 2022) has led the Las Vegas Aces to multiple championships and was also a gold medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Lauren Jackson (Australia): Despite retiring from international play in 2013, Jackson worked her way back to the Australian national team for 2024. Jackson’s career includes three WNBA MVP awards and two WNBA championships.
Satou Sabally (Germany): Sabally was named the WNBA’s Most Improved Player in 2023. A versatile scorer, the Dallas Wings’ star forward has been injured, but is expected to return in time for Paris.
Megan Gustafson (Spain): Megan Gustafson is originally from the United States, but the former collegiate AP Player of the Year went through the naturalization process to play for Spain. Gustafson, who also plays for the Aces, had her number retired at the University of Iowa.
