‘Invincible’ Kills Off Guardian Of The Globe And It’s Heartbreaking
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Amazon’s animated “Invincible” series is no stranger to taking out members of the Guardians of the Globe; after all the very first episode includes Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons) brutally murdering almost the entire team. But in spite of some really close calls, the reformed Guardians have been pretty lucky until this week’s episode, “What Have I Done?”

“What Have I Done?” delivers the heroic death of Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas), a hero who was previously one of the most arrogant Guardians of the Globe but who had been mellowing more recently.
The most recent episode of “Invincible” deals with the most destructive attack we’ve seen on Earth in the series. Over a dozen evil versions of the titular hero from alternate realities, under the guidance of Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown), split up and wreak havoc all over Earth. Each seemingly close in power to the show’s main hero, the rogue Invincibles not only murder countless civilians but make short work of most of the world’s heroes.
The Guardians of the Globe are no exception. Along with Rex Splode, The Immortal (Ross Marquand) is killed though he’s resurrected by the end of the episode. Darkwing (Cleveland Berto) is missing in the Shadowverse and presumed dead but without confirmation.
Rex’s death is as grand as the young hero would want it to be. Mortally wounded, he makes a last stand against one of the evil Invincibles so his teammates can get away. Once he’s run out of items to infuse with power and throw at the evil Invincible, he reaches into his wound and powers up his own skeleton to explode.
The show has a bit of dark fun broadcasting the fact that Rex won’t survive the episode. Just before he suits up to fight the evil Invincible, he’s helping his new girlfriend Shrinking Rae (Grey Griffin) move. As they talk, he says, “The team’s less annoyed with me now that I’ve chilled out. Things with us are downright rad. For the first time in my whole, miserable life…I’m kind of in a good place. Weird.”
Earth’s heroes manage to kill most of the evil Invincibles and Levy banishes the rest to an alternate dimension after they turn on him. Sadly, none of it happens in time to save Rex.
The season 3 finale of “Invincible” streams on Amazon Prime next Thursday, March 13.
